BIO

Jeff Knight visual artist

Jeff Knight (born: 1957, in Watford, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom), is an abstract artist. He paints in a Lyrical Abstract Expressionist style. Knight came late to his art practice at 41 years of age. For most of his life, he went from job to job having left secondary school at 15 without qualifications or having any idea of what he wanted to pursue as a career.  He married in 1978 at the age 21 after settling in East Sussex. His first marriage ended in divorce in 1996. He remarried in 1999, to his second wife Fiona.

He attended Hastings College of Art and Design from 1998 to 2000, and completed a Foundation in Art. Since then, he has been developing his technique and enjoys the experience of time spent experimenting in his studio. During his time at art college he researched art history, JMW Turner, Jackson Pollock and was introduced to the works of a number of contemporary artists particularly Frank Auerbach and Denis Creffield. He was particularly interested in Turner's later paintings because of the abstract nature of these paintings. He was attracted to the way Turner used colour to display light. It was as if each air particle literally shone and reflected light off the canvas. He was fortunate to have the opportunity to see a Jackson Pollick display at The Tate Gallery. And spent the whole day just gazing at these amazing paintings in the flesh. It was the visual effect that struck him. As if he was taken on a visual journey into another dimension.

He is influenced by the observance of nature, by listening to music whilst he is in his studio, by his emotions, his life experiences, his faith in Jesus Christ, the human condition and mortality. Each of his paintings possesses a layer of texture consisting of glue, paper, and decorating fillier. He has begun to add house dust or the contents of a vacuum cleaner, bits of twig and crunched up leaves. He then follows this by mark-making, and then applies layers of paint to produce colour field abstract paintings. Knight is excited by the experience of making a painting. The main interest he has about painting is the surprise of what happens in the studio. The unplanned moments of the process. Knight entered two paintings in a Summer Show of 2016, at Murmarations Gallery, Bexhill, where he received positive comments regarding his artwork. He hasn't displayed any artwork since that time, having been severely ill during 2019 with Bronchiectasis. He now lives and works in St Leonard's on Sea, East Sussex, UK.
